Educational Outreach

TMO/TMF is a secure government facility, operating 365 days per year, 24 hours per day, and supports a wide variety of scientific research programs.  Because of limited staff availability, we can rarely accommodate individual visitors.

Visits by educational groups are welcomed but must be pre-arranged and are limited in size to less than 40 persons.  Please contact the Astronomy Team Lead, Heath Rhoades, at (760) 249-6610 if you would like to arrange such a visit.  All visits are cleared through JPL Visitor Control.  Special requirements will apply if your group includes foreign nationals.  A photo ID must accompany each person unless under the age of 18, where a teacher, counselor or parent must attest to the young person’s identity.

Visits by JPL and Caltech employees and their families can be arranged with advance notice.  Please call  Heath Rhoades during business hours.

Modern day astronomers no longer “look” through the telescope as part of their normal observing.  Instead, they use sensitive electronic instruments, such as CCD cameras and spectrographs, to record the faint light from distant objects.  Visitors to the mountain will be shown what these instruments can do, but actual viewing through the two research telescopes is not available..

College students interested in summer jobs working on research programs at TMO may contact Dr. Paul Weissman, the Astronomy Science Lead, at (818) 354-2636.   Such contacts must be made early in the calendar year, January or February, to be considered for various NASA, JPL and/or Caltech programs.
